From Border 2 to Ramayana: Is Sunny Deol heading for a record SEVEN releases in 2026?

Sunny Deol’s career got a boost with the blockbuster success of Gadar 2 (2023). The sequel to the classic 2001 saga was also the highest grosser in Hindi cinema for some time, proving that Sunny is here to stay. In 2025, he delivered Jaat, an action drama that had a good trend and confirmed that his stardom is very much intact. In 2026, he’ll be seen in one of the most anticipated films, Border 2. It is the sequel to his 1997 blockbuster Border and has generated tremendous excitement due to the popularity and goodwill of the first part, patriotic element, casting and of course, Sunny’s presence. It releases on January 23 and interestingly, this is not his only release in 2026. In fact, he might end up having as many as seven releases this year – 6 theatrical and one OTT.

After Border 2, Sunny Deol will move on to Gabru From Border 2.. Directed by Shashank Udapurkar and produced by Vishal Rana, it is an emotional drama that releases on March 13. It features an extended special appearance by superstar Salman Khan.
On Diwali, Sunny Deol will be presented as Lord Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. Besides Sunny, it also stars Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman From Border 2..
One more multi-starrer of Sunny Deol, which is expected to be out this year, is Lahore 1947 From Border 2.. Based on the popular play Jis Lahore Nai Dekhya, it marks the return of Sunny with his Ghayal (1990), Damini (1993) and Ghatak (1996) director Rajkumar Santoshi. It is produced by Aamir Khan, who also features in the film in an extended cameo. The other actors in the film are Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi and Ali Fazal From Border 2..
Baap, a long-delayed film, is expected to see the light of day this year From Border 2.. Besides Sunny, it also stars Sanjay Dutt, Mithun Chakraborty, and Jackie Shroff and promises to show the veteran performers in a massy, action avatar. It is directed by Vivek Singh Chauhan and produced by Ahmed Khan and Zee Studios From Border 2..

Last year, Sunny Deol completed the shoot of Soorya. The film went on floors in 2022 and a major chunk of the film was already shot after which there was a pause on the shoot. It also stars Manish Wadhwa, Ravi Kishan and others and is produced by Deepak Mukut. It is the remake of the Malayalam film Joseph (2018), and just like the original, Soorya is directed by M Padmakumar From Border 2.. In this film, Sunny Deol plays a retired cop who takes on the organ harvesting mafia.
Lastly, Sunny Deol has an ‘ace’ up his sleeve in the form of Ikka. It’s a Netflix original which also stars Akshaye Khanna, Dia Mirza and Sanjeeda Shaikh From Border 2.. Directed by Siddharth P Malhotra of Maharaj (2024) and Hichki (2018) fame, it’s shoot was wrapped up in December 2025. The film is bound to be keenly awaited due to the casting of not just Sunny but also Akshaye Khanna, who’s on a high after Dhurandhar From Border 2..

Past instances
At one point, it was common for mainstream actors to have more than half a dozen releases, but as time passed, such occurrence became rare. In Sunny Deol’s career, he has had 7 releases twice in a year. In 1989, he was seen in Vardi, Joshilaay, Tridev, Chaalbaaz, Nigahen: Nagina Part II, Aag Ka Gola and Main Tera Dushman. He repeated the feat in 1993 with Kshatriya, Lootere, Damini, Izzat Ki Roti, Veerta, Gunaah and the blockbuster Darr.
It now remains to be seen whether 2026 will become the third time in Sunny Deol’s career that he enjoys seven releases in a single calendar year. The chances, however, appear remote, as at least a couple of these projects could easily spill over into 2027 depending on post-production timelines, release-date reshuffles, etc. Even if Sunny ends up with four or five releases, it would still be a rare, headline-grabbing feat in today’s era of spaced-out filmographies. And if all seven actually arrive within 2026, it’ll be a truly one-of-a-kind year for the actor.
